8-Year-Olds Publish Scientific Bee Study
Slashdot.org reports: "A group of British schoolchildren may be the youngest scientists ever to have their work published in a peer-reviewed journal. In a new paper in Biology Letters, children from Blackawton Primary School report that buff-tailed bumblebees can learn to recognize nourishing flowers based on colors and patterns. The paper itself is well worth reading. It's written entirely in the kids' voices, complete with sound effects (part of the Methods section is subtitled, ''the puzzle'duh duh duuuhhh') and figures drawn by hand in colored pencil." Boy, 3, unearths £2.5m treasure trove on FIRST metal detecting expedition
Instead of bottle caps and ridicule from his peers, 3-year-old James Hyatt (who is now four years old) found a reliquary locket worth millions with his metal detector... James and his dad found the gold locket last May in Essex. Since then the 500-year-old treasure has been appraised at around £2.5million. And in case you're wondering, that's $3.98 milions in dollars... Experts have dated the locket to the early 16th century – the era of Henry VIII – and say it could have belonged to a member of the royal family. James’ father Jason, 34, said: ‘My son is one of the luckiest people ever... If we go to the doctors he’ll put his hand down the side of the sofa and pull out a tenner.’ Read more
Hero request from a third grader. Anyone???
We just found this on Slashdot from an anonymous reader: "Unhappy that all his friends have heroes he knows nothing about (they've all chosen hockey players — actually a hockey player: Sidney Crosby), my eight-year-old son asked me if I would find him a 'cool hero.' When pressed to define 'cool,' he very earnestly gave me this list of acceptable professions: 'Astronauts, explorers, divers, scientists, and pilots.' A second and only slightly less worthy tier of occupations includes 'inventors, meteorologists, and airplane designers.' To be eligible for hero status, an individual must be (1) accomplished in one of these fields, (2) reasonably young (it pains me to report that Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, NASA's youngest astronaut and now just [35], barely makes the cut), and, critically to my naive son's way of thinking, (3) respected by third graders nationwide. Ignoring that last criterion, or not, what heroes would you suggest from the sciences as people whose lives and accomplishments would be compelling to an eight-year-old mind?" 11/19/10 Join the discussion. slashdot
15-Year-Old Boy Fitted With Robotic Heart
"What do you do when a 15-year-old boy is close to death and ineligible for a heart transplant? If you're Dr. Antonio Amodeo you turn to an artificial solution and transplant a robotic heart... a permanent solution offering as much as 25 years of life and is powered by a battery worn as a belt."

Self-proclaimed Spider Boy scales walls using recycled vaccums
No Spiderman costume will do for this 13 year-old. He wanted to be like his hero, Spiderman, so he set about to make his dream a reality. Using two 1,400-watt recycled vacuum cleaners and a little bit of elbow grease, Hibiki Kono made a machine that allows him to scale walls - just like his spindly hero, Spiderman. Window-washing, anyone? slashdot

Mars cave opening found by 7th graders
A newly discovered cave on Mars was found as the result of an interesting class field trip... the 7th grade science class from Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, Calif., found the opening (estimated to be 620 by 520 feet and at least 380 feet deep) while working on a research project with the Mars Space Flight Facility run out of Arizona State University in Tempe. slashdot
