Martial Arts is gaining in popularity with kids and parents as a way of countering the bullying going on in schools and buses... bullys are not likely to try their power-play on a kid who knows martial arts.

According to Paul Del Sordo, who teaches pediatric martial arts, "the discipline teaches self-regulation, builds self-esteem and increases muscle tone and range of motion."

JUDO - The Competition Format:
Athletes compete in weight categories and are divided into two groups within these categories. Competition is on a knockout system that eventually determines the two finalists who compete in the gold medal match.

In each event, the four defeated quarter-finalists compete in two repechage contests. The winners then compete against the two defeated semi-finalists to determine the winners of the two bronze medals.

In the event of a tie, the contest enters a golden score period of three minutes, when the first score wins.

  TAEKWONDO - The Competition format:
The object is to land valid kicks and punches on the opponent’s scoring zones - the trunk protector and the head [ouch!]: In each weight category, the competition consists of a single elimination tournament.

The winners of each contest (made up of three two-minute rounds) qualify for the next round, with the two finalists going head to head in the gold medal contest. All competitors who lose to one of the finalists at any stage of the competition enter the repechage. The two semi-final losers meet the winners of the two repechage pools to determine the winners of two bronze medals.

What the Officials look for:

A referee stays in the contest area, while two line judges sit just outside it to confirm refereeing decisions. Getting a warning from the referee gives points to the opponent. This could be, among other things:
  • Voluntarily leaving the tatami
  • Excessive defence and failing to attempt attacks (known as Passivity)
Warnings range in severity from shido through to hansokumake, which results in instant disqualification.

What the Officials look for:
While corner judges sit at each corner of the court. a referee stays in the combat area. The judges award points for valid kicks and punches that are recorded electronically and warning penalties based on severity for invalid activity such as:
  • Crossing the boundary line
  • Hitting below the waist
  • Using the knee to attack
Four penalty deductions will stop the contest and give the win to the opponent.

More... if you'd like to hold some mini events that mimic the big Olympic Games try these gymnastics in your own backyard or game room. We found the great infographics for the summer games (shown above) that give you visual insight into the individual event.  For many of the winter games, you'll find in-depth explanations at this site with fun visuals.

CHART BELOW: We added these winter "one-pagers" to our Sports Know-How category in time for the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) that were held in January 2012. We got inspired by the 2012 London Summer Games to add to our Summer Sports category. We'll be adding sports periodically so keep checking back. If the titles are shining brightly in white text, they're ready for you to click on! ^.^
