BMX cyclists BMX Cycling - short/demanding track; bikes have 1 gear/1 brake

Strategy - what to watch for:
Bunny-hop – both wheels lift off the ground at once
Holeshot – the first rider to take the lead after the start
Whoop – a small, wave-like bump in the track

Judges (inspectors) are stationed along the course and look out for:
Deliberate interferance or contact with another rider
Obstructing anothers racing line in the final straight
Two warnings can result in disqualification/relegation to last place

Mountain Bike cyclists Mountain Bike - requires reserves of stamina and nerves of steel

Strategy
- Challenging terrain and rocky course means opportunity for things to go wrong.
Riders may carry out their own repairs
Outside assistance allowed only in dedicated assistance zones
Crashes are common; a punctured tire could end medal hopes

Judges (panel of commissaires) oversee the event; Marshalls stationed throughout the course ensure athlete and spectator safety.

Road cyclists Road Cycling - requires immense strength and stamina

Strategy - stay alert, pace and position oneself
Watch out for spradic crowds, potential bumps and crashes
Don't be left behind with the main pack (Peleton)
A 'lead-out' - sacrifices his chances to the benefit of team leader

Judges (race commissaires) follow the race in vehicles and look for:
    Intentional bumping
Riding "air stream" of another cyclist/getting assist from a vehicle

track cycling Track Cycling - There are 10 Olympic Track Cycling events (five for men, five for women), which between them test speed, endurance and teamwork.

Judges (there are a host of officials or commissaires)  including start and finish judges, referees, timekeepers and scorers who look for:
  • Pushing, false starts, line infractions, unsporting manner
  • Colusions between racers
  • Racer being one or several laps down
  • Passing the back wheel of the pacer before he leaves the track

We found some great infographics for the summer games  to give some you visual insights as you'll see when you click on the links above. For many of the winter games, you'll find in-depth explanations at this site with more fun visuals.

CHART BELOW: We added these winter "one-pagers" to our Sports Know-How category in time for the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) that were held in January 2012. We got inspired by the 2012 London Summer Games to add to our Summer Sports category. We'll be adding sports periodically so keep checking back. If the titles are shining brightly in white text, they're ready for you to click on! ^.^
