Step 1: Pick a Topic

We'll use Beijing, China as our topic.

Lapbook helper!

Step 2: Make a List of Subtopics to Research

Some examples are:
  • Climate
  • Native clothing
  • Major cities
  • Native animal species
  • Native languages and how to say popular phrases:
    • Hello
    • Goodbye
    • Please
    • Thank you
    • Peace!

Step 3: Start Your Research

You can pick any way you want, but it’s always best to use more than one source if you can when lapbooking:
  • Go to the library
  • Google your topic
  • Check out Wikipedia
If you’re going to do an online search for the animal species native to your topic pick your search engine such as Google, Bing or Yahoo and type your keywords. You can type the whole question like, “What animals live in Beijing, China?” or simply “animals in Beijing, China.” You will get lots of results with links that come up.

Read through them and pick the one that looks most promising. Wikipedia can be a great source for lapbooking. It shows lots of things about one topic in a summary form. Just make sure you clear it with your parents before you’re clicking on any links and Parents: Make sure Safe Search is on!

Step 4: Write it Up & Bring it all Together

When lapbooking:
  • Use lots of pictures, print them out or run photocopies from books, and paste them onto paper or folders
  • Use scrapbooking stuff if you have it to make the pages look cool
  • Another way is to organize your pages, three-hole punch them and make it into a book
  • Make an awesome cover, even laminate it or slip it into a clear plastic sleeve
Now all of a sudden you have a whole lapbook on Beijing! That's lapbooking! The best part about lapbooking is that you can get really creative and leave your mark on your classroom. You can do just about anything you want with lapbooks and find fun creative ways to learn – just go for it! See? There are tons of Fun Ways to Learn in a Buzzing Kids World… lapbooking is one of them!
