Nordic Combined
|
 |
The Nordic Combined consists of:
- Ski Jumping
- Cross-Country Skiing
The ski jumping element of the event requires dynamic power and precison, while the cross-country race demands endurance and stamina. In a system known as the 'Gundersen' or 'pursuit start', the results of the ski jumping determine the start order for the cross-country race, with athletes starting seconds or minutes after the leader depending on how many points they are behind after the ski jumping leg.

How it works as combined event:
The jumping portion occurs first followed by a free technique cross-country race. The break between the jumping and the cross-country race can be as little as 35 minutes, or as long as a few hours... Using pack-racing strategies in the cross-country portion, the athletes cluster into “trains” that chase down other athlete trains. The winner of the Nordic combined event is the first athlete across the cross-country finish line.
Individual Normal Hill Event
Competitors begin with one ski jump on the normal hill, followed by a 10-kilometre cross-country ski race which usually consists of four, 2.5 kilometre laps. First across finish wins.
Individual Large Hill Event
Competitors begin with one ski jump on the large hill, followed by a 10-kilometre cross-country ski race which usually consists of four, 2.5 kilometre laps. First across finish wins.
Team Event
A Nordic combined team is made up of four athletes. Each competitor jumps once on the large hill. The team results are added together and the team with the highest aggregate score starts first in the cross-country ski portion...The cross-country ski is a relay where each team member skis 5 kilometres. The team with the first skier across the finish line wins. |

Judging the event:
The Gunderson Method (named for its inventor and described above), made the event more fan-friendly. In the past it took judges hours after the event to finish comparing ski jump points and cross-country times and thus determine the winner. This revolutionary formula sped up the process. The new procedure meant that, for the first time, the first athlete to break the tape at the end of the cross-country race was the overall winner.

CHART BELOW: We added these winter "one-pagers" to our Sports Know-How category in time for the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) that were held in January 2012. We got inspired by the 2012 London Summer Games to add to our Summer Sports category. We'll be adding sports periodically so keep checking back. If the titles are shining brightly in white text, they're ready for you to click on! ^.^
