Pokemon
One of the first anime series to appear on American TV, Pokemon is aimed primarily towards pre-teens and could be enjoyed by both boys and girls. Still running on TV and based on the popular playing card and video game series, it does convey a positive message in which main character Ash never gives up from a challenge and learns from his mistakes.

Pokemon (first series)– the characters:
- Ash Ketchum - a young Pokemon trainer who dreams of being the world’s greatest Pokemon Master, Ash travels the world with his friends Brock and Misty, challenging other trainers and Gym Leaders. While he tends to be hotheaded and stubborn, Ash’s never-give-up attitude helps him in his battles.
- Pikachu - Ash’s first Pokemon, Pikachu is an electric rodent-type capable of generating bolts of electricity. It’s a frequent target of Team Rocket, who believes it to be stronger than the average Pikachu.
- Misty - a Water Pokemon trainer, Misty is also the Cerulean City Gym Leader. She originally joined Ash on his journey to make sure he replaced her bike, which he “borrowed” and wrecked, but they have since become friends.
- Brock - a Rock Pokemon trainer and the Pewter City Gym Leader, Brock is also an aspiring Pokemon Breeder. He also joins Ash and Misty, and has a tendency to fall for any pretty girl they meet along the way.
- Gary Oak - the grandson of Pokemon researcher Professor Oak, Gary is also Ash’s rival, always taunting and looking down on him. Anytime he appears, he’s accompanied by a small group of cheerleaders.
- Team Rocket - actually part a large criminal organization, Jesse and James, along with their talking Meowth (a cat-type Pokemon) are the show’s main villains. Always making a big entrance when they appear, this bumbling trio is determined to capture Pikachu and other Pokemon, using all sorts of schemes to do so.
The Storyline:
|
Young Ash Ketchum dreams of being the world’s greatest Pokemon Master, and sets out from his home of Pallet Town with his first Pokemon, Pikachu. Though Ash doesn’t get along with Pikachu at first and often overestimates his abilities, both trainer and Pokemon soon develop a strong bond which helps them in battles. They travel from city to city, challenging various Gym Leaders to earn badges to qualify for the Kanto League tournament, collecting various Pokemon along the way. Joining them are Gym Leaders Misty and Brock, who provide their experience and wisdom to the young Ash.
But other trainers and Gym Leaders aren’t the only obstacles Ash must face. He and his friends are constantly being chased by Jessie and James, members of Team Rocket, who try all sorts of schemes and machines to capture Pikachu. Though more annoying than evil, they too provide a challenge for Ash, who doesn’t hesitate to stop their schemes. |
While not exactly a series for more serious-minded anime fans, Pokemon is a good series for younger and newer fans to start with. Older fans could enjoy it as well, if only for a bit of fun in a buzzing kids world.
