How TO catch the reading bug!
1. It teaches kids to dream 2. Broadens their horizons 3. Keeps their brains sharp as a tack! Our resident Buzzing Kids World-ite caught the reading bug with The Twilight Saga. She loaned the books to her friends and darned if they didn't catch the reading bug, too. When you or your kids select a book for them to read, just be sure it is age appropriate and keeps their level of interest high in anticipation of more to come! Note: The Twilight series is appropriate for ages 12+, but boy what a series to get them started on reading!
Ways to encourage readingFor younger children you can encourage them by hanging a window box near their bed and filling it with great books. Put the "reading is fun!" poster on their wall. Carve out the last 30 minutes before bedtime to read to them or let them read to you. Turn off the TV and music, lie in bed, and dive into stories and make believe. Here are a couple suggestions to get you started, if you haven't already:
Some kids might catch the reading bug with comic books and Anime Cartoons (all based on fantasies, we might add!). Buzzing Kids World has categories of Anime Cartoons and we add more pages on a regular basis. Check our other pages on Buzzing Kids World for new lists of kid-safe books like our TopTen Books for Kids! You may find the book reviews written by teens helpful, too. Thanks for visiting our "reading room" ... so to speak.
