More races, more relays, more fun!
Balloon Relay Race
|
 |
Supplies needed: One balloon per team (have extras in case they break)
Rules, Relayers! The starting player holds the balloon under their chin without dropping it and passes it to the next team member, neck to neck) WITHOUT using hands or arms (just like in the beachball relay) except hands are allowed for picking up the balloon if it falls; AND, no forward movement is allowed until the balloon is properly placed under the chin again. The fun part is watching the wacky body angles as each player maneuvers to accomplish the challenge. Alternating boy, girl, boy, girl in the lineup adds to the fun!
Note: A ball... or egg at Easter-time (as shown in picture on left) can also be used. |
| Baton Relay Race |
 |
Supplies needed: A baton (or substitute, e.g., lightweight barbell, magazine rolled up and secured with a rubber band) for each team.
Rules, Relayers! With baton in hand, each member of a team takes a turn racing around a pre-determined course and handing off the baton to the next racer without stopping until all team members have had a turn. Strategy is knowing who should run first and last (the anchor who makes-up for lost time of earlier runners). |
| Bucket Relay Race |
 |
Supplies needed: Buckets (colorful pails or bowls as shown on the left) and cups or containers for the players to use when filling the buckets.
Rules, Relayers! Players race to fill their bucket with water, one cup or container at a time; when the bucket is filled with the water, it is emptied and the next relayers take their turn filling the bucket. The first team to finish having all players take their turn, wins. |
| Crab Crawl Relay Race |
 |
Supplies needed: None... just ready bodies willing to compete doing the weird/funny crab crawl.
Rules, Relayers! Form teams or race individually. All players must 'crawl' on all fours facing up or down as shown on the left while racing to the finish line. It's not as easy as it looks; but it's fun to watch. Be sure to take pictures for your scrapbooks.
This can be done as an individual race, one at a time, or as a team race (all starting at the same time); race endswhen last crawler of the leading team crosses the finish line. |
| Dribble Relay Race |
 |
Supplies needed: Basketballs or soccer balls; traffic cones; whistle.
Rules, Relayers! Divide team in half. Set up a series of cones about 3 feet apart. On hearing the whistle, the first player from each team dribbles in a snake-like fashion around the cones, going to the right of the first one, the left of the second one and continuing to the end where he dribbles back to the starting point. The next teammate does the same thing. The first team to complete the race with all players dribbling around the cones wins the relay.
