Relay Race Ideas - Page 3

We'll continue to add relay race ideas as we come up with them; here are some more fun relay races to check out. ^.^

Hula Hoop     Jump Rope
  Tennis Ball
   3-Legged Relay

Hula Hoop Relay Race
Supplies needed: One hula hoop for each racer

Rules, Relayers! Divide into teams (which go in opposite directions around the course).  Walk fast while keeping the hoop in motion as you make your way around the pre-determined course; the next player does the same until every  has taken a turn. The tricky thing is to keep your hula hoop in motion... if it stops, you stop until you get it going again. First team to finish wins.

This can also be done as an individual race, one at a time, or team race (all starting at the same time); the race doesn't end until the last hooper of the leading team crosses the finish line.

Jump Rope Relay Race
Supplies needed: Jump ropes for each team or player

Rules, Relayers! Divide into teams. At the starting line, the first player of each team begins jumping rope in opposite directions while advancing all the way around the pre-determined course. The next team player does the same thing until everyone has taken a turn. The tricky thing is to keep moving around the course without missing a jump... if you do mess-up, you have to start at the beginning again. First team to finish wins.

Like the hula hoop and crab crawl race this, too, can be done as an individual or team race, but the race doesn't end until the last player of the leading team has successfully made it around the course.

Tennis Ball Relay Race
Supplies needed: Tennis Racquets and balls for each team or player. Badminton racquets and birdies can also be used.

Rules, Relayers! This is similar the the egg and spoon relay race. Instead of balancing the ball, team members have to bounce the  tennis ball on a racquet as they race around the course and return to bounce the ball off onto the next team member's racquet. Don't let the ball fall; if it falls the runner has to retrieve it before continuing the race. If you want to make it more difficult, have that player start at the beginning again until they complete the course without dropping the ball.

Three Legged Relay Race
Supplies needed: Velcro, rope, or old stockings to tie the ankles together... or sacks to make 3 legs per racing couple.

Rules, Relayers! The left leg of one player is tied to the right leg of the other using one of the items above to create a middle or 3rd leg... OR step into a sack with tthe 'middle' leg to create the 3rd leg. You get 5 minutes to practice, then the pairs race against other pairs for fastest time... or they can compete as relayers and run a marked-off pathway returning to let the next pair continue until every pair on a team has had a turn. The first team to finish wins. The secret is to coordinate moving your "third leg" so you don't fall and slow-up your progress.

As we said, the Olympians aren't the only game-players in town.

Tennis, Anyone!! ^.^
