Room for Children: Stylish Spaces for Sleep and Play
|
  |
From newborn to teeneager
[Hardcover]
|
|
This is a great project you can do with the kids during summer when there's plenty of time for thoughtful planning, let the paint dry, and be ready for the next school term with a whole new outlook. Otherwise, you can still do it over the long mid-term break. Just plan ahead and do the actual work during the break... or gradually over a longer period. But start with a basic floor plan. You may want to explore Feng Shui before making final decisions; especially Feng Shui for Teens.

|
- Sketch out the dimensions including closets, doorways, and windows
- Take measurements wall to wall, floor to ceiling, window and door heights

- Make a wish list, too, such as:
-

-
Wall-to-wall desk top for computer equipment, plenty shelves
-
Seating components... built-in or on rollers for flexibility
-

2nd - Create atmosphere:
Think about walls in terms of color and graphics, window coverings, kids bedding, and accessories, too. If walls are neutral add color with fabrics and accessories. Add interest to the ceiling with stars and moonscapes. For more ideas get some current decorating magazines and see what effect different colors have on the kids emotionally. Clip the pictures you/they like; save them. If you or the kids can sew, figure out what can be made at home. |

3rd - Know your colors:
- RED - causes excitement, activity (ever wonder why restaurants and bars use red; it makes you hungry and thirsty)
- YELLOW - bright, cheerful and good for spaces short on natural light
- BLUE - calming and often seen in bedrooms
- PURPLE - creates an air of mystery; LIGHT PURPLE - romanticism
- ORANGE - be careful, it can be tiring if too intense
- GREEN - a happy medium

To learn more about color and it effect take a look at the
short video below. If after all this you determine that you have the right plan for a new
space, have the kids get to work and start kicking butt. Clear the room, scrub where necessary, paint and bring back the must-stay items.
Finally - accessorize!
Take another look at your new space, a detached look. Is anything missing? (If you need more input check out Accessory Ideas for a Tween Bedroom Makeover.)
