Can kids kick butt in a buzzing kids world? How?
That's the dilemma for families. What's a kid to do? It's all you hear these days, kids are too fat . . .
- not enough exercise
- too much junk food
- et cetera, et cetera

You name it, it's all the kids fault! Or is it? Why don't schools kick butt, or fast food restaurants, and what part do homes play in this dilemma? Let's find out.

Are they helping kids to kick butt? What did kids used to play during recess and what's happening now.
- Dodge Ball is out - much too risky
- "It" is out, too - bruised feelings
- Team activities where sides are chosen - out, may cause self-esteem issues

And this doesn't include school cafeterias. It seems helping kids kick butt is not part of the school curriculum anymore. So what to do?
- Set up your own Dodge Ball event. It's still fun and great exercise as kids run and dodge the ball. For younger children use softer balls until they learn the dodging techniques.
- Run for fun. Take the kids to a parking lot that is mostly vacant on weekends. Go in two or three cars and park them 25' - 50' apart. Have them run in a figure eight pattern around the cars like they do in barrel racing.
- Go to a park playground and tie ribbons around the trees to mark a pathway for the runners. Assign adults along the path for safety.
- Find a place that has a set of steps* where they can run:
- Stadium
- ball park
- public building
Running is a kids kicking butt activity for staying fit, developing leg muscles, and promoting friendly competition.
* For young kids, pick a place that has a railing so they can climb safely.

- too many fatty foods or the wrong kind of fat
- not enough veggies – lettuce and tomatoes don't count and ketchup is not a vegetable (remember that old argument)
The pace is fast enough, that ought to count for something; but it's the wrong kind of pace. So helping kids to kick butt is not on their menu either. Besides, whatever happened to sit-down dinners with the family?

Ah, the home environment! How does it play in creating couch potatoes?

- computers
- cupboard full of junk food
In the parents' defense, it is a way of keeping the little rascals busy and quiet while getting on with a busy schedules. Right? But wait! Maybe there's a better way.
