Catch The Reading Bug
|

|
The reading bug is one bug you WANT your kids to catch!
From the time our kids were wee babies we were reading them books like
Aesop's Fables for Children. While it's the hope they catch the reading bug early we can only hope that the spark will be lit as a baby and burn bright throughout their lives.
Fostering that love is paramount! Encouraging kids to read teaches them to dream, broaden horizons, and keeps their brains sharp as a tack! Buzzing Kids World has found specific books and websites that help both parents AND kids with their reading quests.
So how do you get your kids to catch the reading bug?
(Hint: Not by coughing on them!)
Our resident Buzzing Kids World-ite caught the reading bug with The Twilight Saga. She loaned the books to her friends and darned if they didn't catch the reading bug, too. When you or your kids select a book to read, just be sure it is age appropriate and that it keeps their level of interest high in anticipation of more to come! The Twilight series is only appropriate for ages 12 and up, but boy what a series for the Young Adults!
Keeping up with reading trends
The latest trend is digital or eBook readers (just like the ones listed in the chart below). Some of these CAN be pricey, however, note that the applications for iPhone are free; the only charges are the books themselves.
These Young Adult authors are sure to help them spread the reading bug germ.
Here are some other fiction books worth exploring (with teen reviews).
our kids can download the book and take it with them to read while:
- Standing in line

- In the waiting room at the docs office
- At the airport
- Even on the plane instead of watching the in-flight movie
- In the car
If a digital reader isn't in your budget, take your kids to the library and sign them up for a library card. Make treks to the library a weekly event, on the same day each week, and encourage them to try different styles of books, different authors and different genres. Talk with your librarian about the newest books being released and get suggestions on what the kids are reading. The more fun the outing, the more inclined they are to read!
Ways to encourage your kids to read

For younger children you can encourage them by hanging a window box near their bed and filling it with great books. Put the "
reading is fun!" poster on their wall. Carve out the last 30 minutes before bedtime to read to them or let them read themselves. Turn off the TV and music, lie in bed, and dive into stories and make believe.
Some kids might catch the reading bug with comic books and
Anime Cartoons (all based on fantasies, we might add!). Buzzing Kids World has categories of Anime Cartoons and we add more pages on a regular basis. We have recently added:
The more romantic
Fruits Basket and adventurous
Naruto
Also,
Figure 17 and
Castle In The Sky; Others are in the works.
