Getting started tracing family history
Some online genealogy tools are free, others charge for doing the research. Costs can add up so start tracing your family history by asking family members to help you fill in the blanks with hints, clues, and any details that will help with a deeper search.
Prepare an outline in the form of a tree and write down the names, locations and dates of births and deaths for:
- Mom’s side of the family
- Dad's side of the family
Free genealogy tools
Web genealogy sites have made research easier than ever before. There are different formats… so choose the one that is easiest for you to use; e.g.,
- Geni.com’s interface is easy and uses a vertical format. Best of all... it's free.
- Ancestry.com uses the horizontal format. You can build the family tree for free, but they charge for research. when tracing family history. To cut costs, if using their tool, do what you can on your own during their 14-day free trial period before using their research tool.
- To see samples of how other people build their family tree, Google “family tree", "ancestry", or "geneology". You may get some ideas for your own tree.
